The 18,000th painting robot manufactured by Dürr is being used at Audi in Ingolstadt. The mechanical and plant engineering company is equipping a new topcoat line for interior and exterior painting of the new Q6 e-tron series. The anniversary robot was handed over to the car manufacturer at the end of April at the company’s headquarters in Bietigheim-Bissingen (Germany).
The new six-axis painting robot, an Eco RP L033i, has been installed in the interior painting booth since May. It is equipped with the new Eco Bell 4 atomizer generation. Thanks to its 4-main-needle technology, the system only needs four seconds for each color change. “This application technology enables us to connect the three colors that we paint most frequently to the atomizer simultaneously and directly,” explains Sven Veit, responsible for paint shop production planning at Audi AG. “This significantly reduces paint and solvent consumption.”
The new topcoat line is equipped with a total of 28 robots and the corresponding application technology. The plant manufacturer is also supplying a quality measuring cell, in which the coating thickness and structure of the paint and the color tone are measured, as well as a cleaning station. Here, two Eco RS Clean F robots with spring rollers clean the car bodies. In addition, an Eco Supply P special paint supply system with pigging technology is used to provide many colors flexibly one after the other for application.
“We are always delighted when we receive a challenging project,” says Dr. Lars Friedrich, Head of the Application Technology Division at Dürr. “What is new at Audi are the numerous innovations that we are bringing to the field for the first time.”
