Covestro received the "Materialica Design + Technology Awards 2018" in the "CO2 Efficiency" category for its development of the first biobased hardener for lightfast polyurethane coatings. The new hardener is of similar high quality to its petrochemical counterparts. With a biomass content of 70 percent, however, it achieves a 30 percent improvement in CO2 footprint than comparable fossil products, based on one kilogram of hardener. Coatings based on this hardener are suitable for automotive, plastics, wood, furniture and industrial coatings. Last year, test bodies of the Audi Q2 were successfully coated with a clear coat containing biobased hardeners.
