Scientists from several Fraunhofer divisions will be presenting their findings and providing insights into ongoing research projects at two different exhibition stands from April 22 to 26, 2024. For example, an exhibit on loss-free coating for surface finishing of additively manufactured components can be seen in hall 2 on stand B24.

Additive manufacturing processes have long since arrived in industrial reality. They offer a high degree of flexibility and enable new products and solutions in a wide range of industries. However, the surface of additively manufactured components exhibits porosity or roughness in almost all common processes, meaning that appropriate post-treatment is required. An exhibit from the Fraunhofer Group for Production is dedicated to this topic. It shows various ways of improving the surface properties of additively manufactured components. Fraunhofer IPA will be presenting the technology of lossless painting as a possibility for the automated decoration and coating of additively manufactured plastic components. The expertise from Oliver Refle's Additive Production and Oliver Tiedje's Coating Technology divisions will be incorporated here. Optimized process control in additive manufacturing combined with targeted post-treatment to smooth the component surface form the basis for subsequent painting without the formation of paint mist – with paint systems that have been specially adapted to the surface properties of additively manufactured plastic components. This means that high-quality component surfaces can also be achieved economically for personalized components.
