Evonik will market 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate phosphate as a corrosion inhibitor and flame retardant under the name Visiomer Hema-P 70M. The methacrylate monomer was previously mainly known as an adhesion promoter. The latest results show that methacrylate monomer can also be used as a reactive flame retardant or corrosion inhibitor. It acts either as a reactive diluent or as a co-monomer bound in the polymer backbone. Unlike conventional flame retardants, it therefore does not migrate. In combination with non-polymerizable flame retardants, it further improves flame retardancy. Due to its low viscosity, the monomer is also easy to process and its low color number makes it well suited for optical applications in acrylate and methacrylate systems. This enables it to be used in applications with high demands on transparency and surface quality, for example in surface coatings, plastics or adhesives. www.evonik.com
